Ghost in the Shell is just as great as Ghost in the Shell.

The manga Ghost in the Shell was followed by a sequel, Ghost in the Shell 2: Man/Machine Interface.

The movie Ghost in the Shell was an adaptation of the first manga. The second movie, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence, was a sequel to the first movie, developed out of a chapter in the first manga. It hasn't been shown on tv in the US because of a dispute over dubbing between the distributor DreamWorks and Production I.G.

Innocence generated a prequel in the form of a novel, After the Long Goodbye, about Batou looking for his lost dog.

Man/Machine Interface, the second manga, generated its' own prequel, Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human-Error Processor.

The tv series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, is a separate chronology. There are at least three novels associated with it.

Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid State Society, a feature continuing the tv series, will be released in the US in July. I haven't read the synopsis at IMDB further than the first line, "It has been two years since Motoko Kusanagi left Section 9. Togusa is now the new leader of the team..."

The studio says they have no plans to stop.
